Hypermobility

At Port Melbourne Physiotherapy and Pilates we pride ourselves on providing our clients with exceptional quality Physiotherapy services by a qualified and professional team.

Helping You Move with Confidence

Living with hypermobility or Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) can affect more than just your joints. Many people experience ongoing pain, fatigue, instability, dizziness, pelvic floor concerns, and difficulty tolerating exercise. Physiotherapy can help you better understand your body, improve movement confidence, and develop strategies to manage symptoms safely and effectively.

Our approach is individualised, supportive, and focused on helping you improve function without pushing your body beyond its limits.

What is Hypermobility?

Hypermobility means the joints move beyond the normal range of motion. Some people are naturally flexible without any issues, while others experience pain, instability, fatigue, or repeated injuries. In some cases, hypermobility may be associated with conditions such as Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) or Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD).

Because connective tissue affects many systems in the body, symptoms can vary widely from person to person.

Common Symptoms of Hypermobility

Symptoms may include:

  • Joint pain or frequent sprains
  • Feeling unstable or “giving way”
  • Muscle tightness or fatigue
  • Chronic fatigue or poor exercise tolerance
  • Dizziness or symptoms associated with POTS
  • Neck, back, shoulder, hip, or pelvic pain
  • Frequent headaches or jaw tension
  • Poor body awareness or coordination
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction
  • Anxiety, overwhelm, or mental health impacts related to chronic symptoms

Physiotherapy Assessment for Hypermobility

Your initial assessment is designed to understand how hypermobility affects your daily life and movement.

This may include:

  • Discussion of your symptoms, goals, and medical history
  • Screening for hypermobility and EDS-related concerns
  • Assessment of posture, movement patterns, strength, and stability
  • Evaluation of fatigue levels and exercise tolerance
  • Screening and advice for associated concerns including:
    • EDS/hypermobility
    • POTS
    • fatigue management
    • mental health considerations
    • pelvic floor concerns
  • Identification of activities or movements that may be contributing to pain or instability

If needed, we can also refer you to other healthcare professionals or specialists for further assessment and management.

Physiotherapy Treatment for Hypermobility

Treatment is tailored to your body, symptoms, and goals. Physiotherapy for hypermobility is not about pushing harder — it’s about building strength, stability, awareness, and confidence gradually and safely.

Your physiotherapist can help with:

  • Individualised exercise prescription to improve musculoskeletal function
  • Safe progression of movement and exercise capacity
  • Pacing strategies and fatigue management plans
  • Improving joint stability and body awareness
  • Pain management and movement education
  • Manual therapy where appropriate to assist with pain relief and movement awareness
  • Advice regarding braces, compression garments, taping, and footwear support where appropriate
  • Guidance for returning to work, sport, study, or daily activities

Exercise & Movement Support

Many people with hypermobility have previously been told to either “exercise more” or “avoid exercise altogether.” The reality is that the right type of exercise, introduced gradually and appropriately, is often one of the most effective ways to improve symptoms.

We focus on:

  • Strength and stability training
  • Motor control and proprioception
  • Breathing and nervous system regulation
  • Graded return to activity
  • Sustainable movement habits
  • Building confidence with exercise

A Collaborative & Supportive Approach

Hypermobility often affects multiple areas of health, and management works best when care is collaborative. Physiotherapy can form part of a broader support team alongside GPs, specialists, psychologists, pelvic health physiotherapists, dietitians, or exercise professionals when required.

Our goal is to help you feel more supported, informed, and capable in managing your symptoms long term.

If you are experiencing symptoms of hypermobility, EDS, chronic pain, fatigue, or instability, physiotherapy may help you better understand your body and improve your day-to-day function.
