Vertigo & Vestibular Rehabilitation

At Port Melbourne Physiotherapy and Pilates we offer treatment for people suffering from vertigo and dizziness

Vertigo (dizziness) is a common complaint among people of all ages and depending on the cause, it may be treatable by a Physiotherapist. Vestibular rehabilitation refers to the Physiotherapy-based management of vertigo, utilising specific exercises to optimise the function of the vestibular system (inner ear).

There are many causes of Vertigo, but our physiotherapists can conduct specific testing to determine whether your vertigo is able to be treated by Physiotherapy.

The most common type of vertigo that is treated by our physiotherapists is BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo). This is a common inner ear disorder that causes a sensation of the world spinning, triggered by changes in head position. It occurs when small calcium carbonate crystals in the inner ear become dislodged and move into the wrong area (semicircular canals). Treatment involves repositioning maneuvers (like the Epley maneuver) performed by our physiotherapists.

Other conditions that cause vertigo or dizziness may still respond to different types of vestibular rehabilitation, including gaze stabilisation and balance retraining. Your Physiotherapists will determine the best course of treatment and create a personalised program for you.

If you or someone you know is suffering from vertigo, book in with one of our qualified Physiotherapists to see whether Vestibular Rehabilitation would be beneficial in the management and future prevention of vertigo.
