The benefits of using the extra eyelet on your running shoes

Have you ever wondered what the extra eyelet at the top of your running shoes is for? I personally have never used the extra eyelet in all my years of running, until earlier this year…..and it’s been a game changer. I’ve always just ignored it and it never crossed my mind to look into it further, until a runner I follow posted a video about why she laces her shoes a particular way. While it may seem like a minor detail, using this extra eyelet on your running shoes can significantly enhance your running experience. Here’s why using this often-overlooked feature can be beneficial:

  1. Enhanced Ankle Support

The extra eyelet, often referred to as the “heel lock” or “lockdown” eyelet, allows for a more secure lacing pattern. By threading your laces through this top eyelet, you can create a snugger fit around your ankle. This added security helps prevent your foot from sliding inside the shoe. This can be particularly useful on uneven terrain or during high-intensity runs.

  1. Reduced Slippage and Blisters

A common issue for runners is heel slippage, which can lead to blisters and discomfort. Utilizing the extra eyelet helps to lock your heel in place, reducing movement inside the shoe. This snug fit minimizes the risk of blisters and hotspots caused by friction, allowing you to keep going with your training program.

  1. Improved Stability and Control

The extra eyelet contributes to better overall stability. By securing the upper part of your shoe more tightly around your ankle, in a “heel lock”, you enhance the shoe’s stability during dynamic movements. This stability is crucial for maintaining control, especially on technical trails, in muddy or slippery conditions or during rapid directional changes. This extra control helps to prevent ankle injuries.

  1. Customisable Fit

Not every runner has the same foot shape or fit preference. The extra eyelet provides an additional level of customization. By experimenting with different lacing techniques through this top eyelet, you can adjust the fit to suit your specific needs, whether that’s a tighter lockdown for a more secure feel or a slightly looser fit for comfort.

  1. Enhanced Performance

A well-secured shoe contributes to better overall performance. When your foot is held securely in place, your movements become more efficient and controlled. This can translate to improved running form, better energy transfer, and potentially even faster times, as you’ll spend less energy correcting foot movement issues.

My personal experience

Earlier this year I had a flare up of an old Achilles tendon injury. It was super frustrating as I really have worked hard to manage it and continue to run (and it had been good for years). Whilst I really loved my Mizuno runners I was always finding my foot was slipping inside my shoe and I was always readjusting the lace tightness. I often found the laces too tight on my foot but not tight enough around my ankle. It was around this time I saw a video of a runner talking about why she uses the extra eyelet of her running shoes so decided to give it a go. The first run felt so different, no slipping, no feeling of ankle instability and just generally felt like an easier run.

How to use the eyelet

Incorporating the extra eyelet into your lacing routine may seem like a small adjustment, but its impact on your running experience can be substantial. By using this feature, you can enhance ankle support, reduce blisters, improve stability, and find a more customized fit. So next time you lace up your running shoes, don’t overlook that extra eyelet—your feet will thank you for it.
